Utility of dermoscopy in the diagnosis of lesions suspected of melanoma in a case report
Abstract
This article presents the clinical case of a 71-year-old woman with irregular hyperpigmentation on the first toe of the left foot, affecting the proximal nail bed and fold, as well as the distal edge. The pigmentation has been present for 10 years, initially diagnosed as onychomycosis and treated twice without success. The patient refused skin biopsy due to her low pain tolerance. This study highlights the importance of dermoscopy as a non-invasive diagnostic tool in the identification of lesions suspicious for melanoma. The purpose of this publication is to encourage dermatology physicians to train in the use of dermoscopy as a diagnostic tool.
