Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is one of the noncommunicable diseases that has become a pandemic, increasing mortality rates due to its micro and macro vascular complications, transforming the local epidemiology of several sectors, especially rural ones.
Although the pathophysiology of Diabetes, as well as its complications, treatment and therapeutic goals are well documented, there are not enough studies of the sociocultural implications that this disease of "modernity" attracts when it affects rural populations.
The objective is to conduct a literature review on diabetes and sociocultural aspects to contextualize this knowledge towards tropical countries.
Method
We use the critical reading method to contextualize the reviewed evidence in an analytical way. This means that in addition to understanding what is said in a specific text, we try to analyze what is expressed to verify its successes, its errors and the ways in which the information is presented. We seek to have a vision of the facts presented, trying to corroborate what is affirmed with other sources.
