Abstract

Objective: To analyze the factors related to the epidemiological change of urolithiasis in a population belonging to the subtropical northwestern province of Pichincha, Ecuador through a review of the records of a rural hospital and a review of the literature.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: Review of hospital records with the first diagnoses for kidney stones condition (ICD-10 N20-N23) of a Rural Hospital located in the canton Pedro Vicente Maldonado during the period 2010-2015.

Results: The incidence of kidney stones in the population attended shows a progressive increase during a period of 5 years (2010-2015). The male sex had the highest prevalence with 62.1%. 20% of the total patients with stones had a BMI of more than 24.99. The most frequent age of presentation of the first calculus was between 45 and 50 years; More than a third of patients (36.8%) had a family history (parents or siblings) of urolithiasis. The most frequent previous comorbidities were urinary tract infection (UTI) in 40% of cases and arterial hypertension in 11.8%.

Conclusions: The experience in the rural hospital Pedro Vicente Maldonado of the Northwest of the Province of Pichincha in Ecuador suggests that the prevalence of urolithiasis has increased in recent years and is higher than that reported in other regions of the country.
